This page provides the following programs and utilities

to help you get the maximum performance from your computer.

CPU Optimizing Utilities

These utilities will help you optimize a AMD K6, Pentium,Pentium® Pro, and the Cyrix 6x86 (including the M2) proceessors.

  • DX5ENG[5668k] (DirectX5)
The new DirectX 5.0 drivers add many improvements including support for force feedback controllers, multi monitor support (in Windows 98), a new Game Controllers control panel, better MMX support, a DirectX control panel, and an overall improved user interface. You should notice a speed improvement, in applications that use DirectX, as well.

  • DXCONTRL. [569k]
The control panel for DirectX 5.0 above, allows you to verify installed drivers, and has a variety of D3D options that can be modified.

  • ENWA [62k]
This utility enables the K6's write allocate feature on motherboards.

  • Write Allocate Utility for AMD-K5/K6 processors
This contains several K5 and K6 tools to read and set the Machine Specific Registers. It also contains four batch files for K5 to set up Write Allocate in the MSR's. There is NO factory support for these tools. Use at your own risk. For Windows NT.

Intel Pentium® / Pentium Pro / Pentium II Processors

  • CTPPRO [16k]
This utility enables the PPro/P2 write buffers on the Intel Orion and Natoma Chipsets, increases video performance by re-programming the PPro's internal Memory Type Range Register (MTRR), and enables the fast strings of the PPro.

  • FASTVID [237k]
This program enhances video performance by programming the PPro/P2's MTRR's to write combined and enables the write buffers of the Orion Chipset.

Cyrix 6x86

  • 6X86CFG.EXE [972k)
A utility written by Olivier Gilloire that optimizes your Cyrix 6x86 processor. It is different from other 6x86 optimizers because it can be controlled through a GUI instead of a command prompt.

  • CX_TEST.EXE [80k]
Find out if your BIOS programs the 6x86 registers correctly.

  • 6XOPT077.ZIP [60k]
Author - Mikael Johansson - This program optimizes the 6x86 processor by enabling features of that are disabled by default such as the Branch Target Buffer (BTB), and the Linear Frame Buffer.

  • M1OPT.EXE
Enables features of the 6x86 that are disabled by default to increase performance.

  • M2-OPT.ZIP
Same as above but thi s one is for the M2 Processor from Cyrix
    .
  • 686Fast V3.0
Speeds up your Cyrix 6x86, 5x86 and DX/4 CPU by about 5-10% by enabling CPUID command
    .
  • 5x86
This program will enable you to easily adjust the performance control register of the Cyrix 5x86 CPU.

  • Sysenh.zip
  • First beta version of Sysenhance! Optimizes the K6, the 6x86MX and even your motherboard!

Bios Optimizing Utilities

Often BIOS setups will not allow many system settings to be altered. This is a major drawback because many settings, such as DRAM memory timings and Cache SRAM timings, which have an impact on your PC's performance are diabled by the computer manufacturer for your own 'protection' There are a number of ways that the so called 'hidden' settings can be viewed and/or altered, depending on your system:

PCs with AMI BIOS

A programmer by the name of Robert Muchsel has written a program called AMISetup that will allow you to access and change the hidden settings of your system. It works with AMI's High Flex BIOS', as well as with AMI WinBIOS.

PC's without AMI BIOS (Award, Mr. BIOS, Phoenix)

This program was written by a German programmer and the docs included with the program are in German. An English translation of the CTCHIPZ docs is avaliable.

  • If your PC doesn't have AMI BIOS,CTCHIPZ accesses your PC at the chipset code level and allows you to alter many undocumented system settings. However, as the program is chipset specific. The current version (v3.4) will work with the following chipsets (when you use the program, which comes with configuration files for the following chipsets, you need to know the name of the .CFG file for your system - the names are specified next to the chipset/system type):

  • Misc. with AMI BIOS (RTCAMI.CFG)
  • Cyrix 6x86 Systems (CX686.CFG)
  • Cyrix 5x86 Systems (CX586.CFG)
  • Cyrix 486DX Systems (CX486DX.CFG)
  • Eteq Micro (ETEQ.CFG)
  • IBM 486DLC (IBM486.CFG)
  • Intel Aries (ARIES1.CFG)
  • Intel Mercury (INTELPCI.CFG)
  • Intel Neptune (INTELPCI.CFG)
  • Intel Saturn (SATURN.CFG)
  • Intel Triton FX (INTELPCI.CFG)
  • OPTi 596 (OPTI596.CFG)
  • Intel Triton VX (INTELPCI.CFG)
  • Intel Triton HX (INTELPCI.CFG)
  • Intel Natoma (INTELPCI.CFG)
  • OPTi 495 (OPTI495.CFG)
  • OPTi 482B (OPTI482B.CFG)
  • OPTi 391 (OPTI391.CFG)
  • OPTi 493 (OPTI491.CFG)
  • SiS 461 (SIS461.CFG)
  • SiS 411 (SIS411.CFG)
  • SiS 401 (SIS401.CFG)
  • Shasta 486 (SHASTA.CFG)
  • Symphony SL82C461 (SYM461.CFG)
  • UMC 881 (UM881.CFG)
  • UMC 481A (UMC481A.CFG)
  • UMC 482A (UMC482A.CFG)
  • VIA 495 (VT82C495.CFG)

  • Windows95 Dial-Up Optimization Utillities

These utilities edit the MTU settings. What are the MTU ? It sets the size of the packets transmitted/ expected. The internet standard is 576, but since Win95 is configured for a LAN the default setting is 1500. Changing the MTU setting to 576 can have a dramatically positive effect on performance.

Be sure to back-up your Windows 95 registry files! You can download cfgback.zip do this. Though it rarely happens, cfgback has been known to fail at restoring the registry. So, if you want to be extra careful you can back up the registry manually with these instructions.

    TweakDUN Utility

A quote from the authors of the program.

"We are proud to be able to offer you TweakDUN v1.2, marvelous utility works on all language versions of Windows 95. The beauty of TweakDUN (DUN = Dial Up Network) is in the ease of changing the settings and/or restoring default settings. And it is foolproof. Many people have reported excellent results with modified MaxMTU and RWIN settings for web browsing, e-mail and newsgroups, but poor success with certain games like Quake. Some people spend a lot of time connected to LAN, where best results are obtained with the Windows 95 default settings, but wanted to improve their data transfer rates when using a dialup connection. Now you can do it all, easily changing your settings for one purpose or another."

It is the only one of these utilities to support all foreign languages. Support these authors for their hard work by registering the program if you like it!

    PPP-Boost Utility

PPP-Boost is a small freeware utility that allows you to try edit the registry settings for yourself. Simply run PPP-Boost, select the recommended settings and reboot your PC.
